Singapore, 27 September 2006
Apart from challenging themselves physically and mentally at the Great Eastern Women 10K, the biggest all-women road race on Sunday, 29 October, participants will have a chance to help the less fortunate.
Great Eastern Women 10K has adopted ‘Women Make a Difference’ (WMD) as their official beneficiary and has made a call to women to play their part against child sex tourism by signing up for either the 5km Fun Run or the 10km Run.Women Make a Difference’ was formed to provide assistance to women and children in countries that are in need of help, through a range of projects and activities. Proceeds from the Great Eastern Women 10K will go towards the School Beach Phuket project, a collaboration between ‘Women Make a Difference’ and World Vision International, which raises funds to protect young girls against the commercial sex trade.
Mr Tan Beng Lee, Director and Group CEO of Great Eastern, said “We are pleased to be working with ‘Women Make a Difference’. The Great Eastern Women 10K is an event exclusively for women. It thus makes a lot of sense for us to channel part of the proceeds from the event to the School Beach Phuket project.
We are glad to be involved in this meaningful cause.”For each participant who signs up for the 10km Run or 5km Fun Run, $15 of their registration fees will go towards the building of a refugee centre in Phuket which will provide assistance and education to children who need to be protected from child sex tourism. To sign up, they can register at www.women10k.com using the code ‘WOMEN18’.
Eunice Olsen and Karen Tan, celebrity endorsers for ‘Women Make a Difference’ and Melanie Martens, SEA Games gold medallist and Captain of the National Hockey Team from 1993, were the first to sign up as part of the initiative to drive funds for the protection of children against the commercial sex trade.
Ms Olsen, who will be taking part in the event with her family members commented, “We are grateful that the Great Eastern Women 10K has decided to adopt ‘Women Make a Difference’ as their official beneficiary. We jumped at the opportunity to work with the organisers when they approached us because there has never been a better avenue for women to play their part to help the less fortunate. This being a women-only event, I’m sure that our female participants will feel strongly for the cause, which is to save all these little girls from the commercial sex industry.”
Participants will embark on a mind and body journey, starting from the Anderson Bridge near City Hall, and ending at the Padang off St. Andrew’s Road. The 10km race will be flagged off at 7.30 am and the 5km Fun Run at 8.30am.
Mr Terence Khoo, Managing Director of Enterprise Sports Group, organiser of the event said, “Jogging ranks as the top sport amongst women in Singapore. Through this event, we hope to get as many women as possible to run not just to keep fit, but also contribute to a worthy cause.”
Aimed at providing an avenue for women to challenge their personal limits, the event is open to women with a zest for life and passion for sports. Registrants for the 10km Run will receive a race pack which includes an exclusive adidas climalite ladies-cut running top while registrants for the 5km Fun Run will receive a race pack which includes an Adidas climalite cap.
