Do's and Don'ts of Sun Protection
Do's:
• Avoid peak sun hours (12am to 4pm)- Dress sensibly
• the tighter the weave of your clothes, the more sun protection it will offer
• Know your SPF
• if your skin “burns” after 5 minutes, an SPF15 means you can limit burning for 5min x 15
(ie 1 hour and 15 minutes)
• Choose a suitable SPF
• the higher the SPF, the greater the protection from sunburn (UVB rays)
• Choose a SPF adapted to your skin type and sun destination
• Apply sun care products approximately 20 minutes before going outdoors
• Re-apply your sun care product every two hours (yes, even those water-resistant ones!)
Don’ts:
• Assume that SPF provides dual protection
• SPF only provides UVB protection, not UVA.
• Assume that you are safe on cloudy days (sun care with at least SPF15 is still necessary)
• Assume that you are safe indoors
(UVA can penetrate your skin even when you are in the car!)
• Assume that sunscreens protect you fully from UV rays
• sunscreens are not perfect- Rely on your tan to protect you
• Start protecting yourself late – most of our lifetime exposure occurs before the age of 20
